Characteristics of a Thriving Society
On September 9, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan will play host to the "Building Healthier Communities" event, sponsored by the NAACP Los Angeles, Healthix, and presented by City & State. This gathering aims to bring together government and business stakeholders to discuss combining action with access to necessary resources for individuals like Teresa, a homeless woman who has been in four substance abuse treatment programs in the past decade.
John D'Angelo, CEO-elect of Northwell Health, and Cindy Hsu, anchor and Reporter for CBS News New York at Noon, will deliver keynote remarks, emphasizing a holistic approach to community health that includes forging deep partnerships, blending medical expertise with social interventions, and leveraging new technology and data.
Three panel discussions will take place throughout the day. The first will focus on the growing need for integrated behavioral health services, emphasizing data-informed care coordination and community-based solutions for mental health and substance use recovery. Speakers for this panel include Joseph Conte, Michael LaRocca, Pamela Mattel, Jon R. Cohen, Eva Wong, and Joshua Rubin.
The second panel will address the cost of care, focusing on innovative approaches to reducing financial burdens on patients and health systems. Speakers for this panel include the same individuals mentioned above, with the exception of Joshua Rubin, who will be replaced by Vanessa Pino Lockel.
Vanessa Pino Lockel will also moderate the maternal morbidity & mortality panel, where speakers will discuss how targeted interventions, timely alerts, and cross-sector collaboration can improve outcomes for birthing people. This panel includes Isaac Dapkins, Wendy Wilcox, Shawnee Benton Gibson, and Patricia Loftman.
Unfortunately, the federal administration's intentions to target drug users like Teresa, who is currently homeless and relies on a primary shelter that is a substance abuse treatment program, may complicate matters. The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration has published a letter stating that "harm reduction" programs are incompatible with their goals, and federal funding has been cut for programs like the one Teresa depends on. This has led to concerns about the treatment program's potential closure.
The "Building Healthier Communities" event can be registered for on the registration page at City & State. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from experts, network with other stakeholders, and contribute to conversations that could lead to meaningful change in our communities.
