Charity store to close six additional locations amidst widespread shop closures - could yours be among them?
In a recent announcement, the disability charity Scope has revealed that it will be closing six more of its stores by the end of September. This decision follows the closure of 50 stores earlier in the year, as part of a consultation process. In total, Scope is considering shutting 77 of its 138 stores across the country.
The affected stores include Worthing, West Hampstead, Dewsbury, Skipton, Parkstone, Haywards Heath, Erdington, Orpington, Birkenhead, New Milton, Shirley, Barking, Atherstone, Bury, Eastbourne, Newport, Castleford, Devizes, Petersfield, Hertford, Bexhill, Bishop Auckland, and Workington. The Amersham store will also close by the end of the month.
Debbie Boylen, head of retail at Scope, stated that the decision does not reflect the hard work and dedication of the team members and volunteers. She emphasised that the closures are necessary due to financial difficulties faced by the charity.
The charity faced a £1.5million loss in the financial year, and the closure of these stores is expected to save around £1.5million annually. The stores set to close on September 6 include Bishop's Stortford, Huntingdon, and Newmarket. On September 27, the Beverley and Fleet stores will permanently shut.
The closures are happening in three phases, with the first round occurring before the end of March. The stores of Bangor, Welling, Mitcham, Scarborough, Exmouth, Southampton (Portswood Road), and Lewisham are also part of the first phase.
Previously closed stores include Halstead, Hinkley, Camborne, Kendal, Gosport, Wednesbury, Rochdale, Nuneaton, Gillingham High Street, Beckenham, Portsmouth, Taunton, Bromley, Bridgwater, Burton, Blyth, and Hove George.
Scope continues to assure its supporters and the public that it is committed to providing essential services for people with disabilities. The charity is exploring new ways to generate revenue and adapt to the changing retail landscape.
