Obituary: Charles Edward Harwood (1932-2025)
Charles Edward Harwood, a man of exceptional technical skills and social articulation, passed away on August 23, 2025, at Flagstone Care Center in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Born on January 24, 1932, near Maddock, North Dakota, Charles spent his life making significant contributions to education, community, and the arts.
Charles began his career by teaching math and metal shop in Roseville, Minnesota. His passion for education led him to serve for many years as President of the Rochester AVTI, now the Rochester Community and Technical College. He also worked with members of the Minnesota State Legislature to significantly increase the size of the educational facility.
Charles's educational journey included attending Moorhead State University and earning his Doctorate in Education from the University of Minnesota.
During the Korean War, Charles served in the US Navy on the Aircraft Carrier USS Essex CV 9 as a radar/sonar electronics technician.
Charles was the fifth of six children of Russell Kahler and Clara (Nestegard) Harwood. He was preceded in death by his five siblings: Esther Watson, Ruth Rabenberg, Lloyd Harwood, Richard Harwood, and Mary Newman.
Charles was a generous and gracious man, survived by his wife, Glory Ann Alma Lemke, whom he married on August 10, 1957, four sons, their wives, 15 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and a brother-in-law.
A celebration of remembrance for Charles will be held at 11:00 am on October 4, 2025, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham, Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers, memorials and remembrances for Charles can be forwarded to the Arbor Day Foundation.
Charles had a lifelong love for poetry and memorized lengthy poems such as "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold. He was also an avid bird watcher and gardener, able to identify various bird and plant species. Charles had large gardens, planted trees, and orchards.
Charles was involved in churches in the Vergas area and Mesa, Arizona, and was known for helping neighbors.
Fabricating numerous practical devices in his home machine and welding shop, Charles's innovative spirit will be remembered by many. Unfortunately, there are no publicly available records or verified information regarding the current locations of Charles's family members.
Charles Harwood will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the institutions he helped build.
