FIDE Grand Swiss 2025: Indian and Austrian Chess Players Shine
The FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, the fourth edition of the prestigious tournament, is currently underway, with the Press Trust of India (PTI) providing updates. This year's event features a total of 116 players in the Open section, including an Indian trio of Grandmasters (GMs) Praggnanandhaa, Erigaisi, and D Gukesh.
In the Open section, the leaders after the second round are Alireza Firouzja, Parham Maghsoodloo, and Anton Demchenko, who all have a perfect 2/2. Notably, Firouzja is the only top-20 seed with a perfect score so far. Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi have also notched their first victories in the tournament, adding to the excitement.
Meanwhile, in the women's section, R Vaishali and Olga Bedelka of Austria are currently tied at the top with a score of 2/2 each. Vaishali's strong rating positions her to potentially take the sole lead. Her victory in the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 two years ago demonstrated the growing power of Indian women's chess.
Vaishali and R Praggnanandhaa, who also secured his first victory in the tournament, will be aiming to maintain their form as the tournament progresses. Other notable performances include GM Mariya Muzychuk's second victory in the women's section and D Gukesh's draw against Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus in the Open section.
The Open section boasts a total prize fund of USD 625,000, with the winner set to receive USD 90,000. The top two players in both sections will qualify for the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournaments, where they will have the opportunity to challenge for the world championship title.
As the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 continues, fans of chess around the world will be eagerly following the progress of their favourite players. With a number of exciting matches already underway, the tournament promises to be a thrilling spectacle of strategic brilliance and competitive spirit.
