Chicago baseball legends Sammy Sosa and Derek Lee earn honors in the Cubs' prestigious Hall of Fame
Cubs Legends Sammy Sosa and Derrek Lee Inducted into Hall of Fame
Two iconic figures from the Chicago Cubs' history, Sammy Sosa and Derrek Lee, were inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame on Sunday. The ceremony took place at Wrigley Field, where both players made their mark during their time with the team.
Sammy Sosa, a seven-time All-Star, spent 13 seasons with the Cubs after joining the team in a trade from the crosstown White Sox in March 1992. In 1,811 games with the Cubs, Sosa hit a franchise-record 545 homers, including a monumental 66 in 1998, when he was named the National League's Most Valuable Player (MVP). His last game with the Cubs was played at Wrigley on Oct. 2, 2004.
After his last game, Sosa remained a free agent for the 2005 season before signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 2006. However, Sosa returned to Wrigley Field for the first time in more than 20 years earlier this year. ESPN and the Associated Press reported on his emotional return.
During the induction ceremony, Sosa was presented with his Hall of Fame blazer by Aramis Ramirez. Sosa also took the opportunity to issue an apology for his past mistakes. His former teammate, Derrek Lee, was also inducted. Lee, a National League All-Star in 2005 and 2007 while playing for the Cubs, played with the team from 2004 to 2010. He was presented with his blazer by Kerry Wood.
Both Sosa and Lee threw out first pitches during the ceremony, symbolising the passing of the baton to the next generation of Cubs legends. The event concluded with the two inductees leading the 7th inning stretch, a tradition that has become synonymous with Wrigley Field.
The Cubs traded Sosa to Baltimore with cash in February 2005 for three players. Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, Sosa's contributions to the team will never be forgotten. Lee, on the other hand, continued to shine in the Cubs' lineup until his departure in 2010.
The induction of Sosa and Lee into the Cubs Hall of Fame is a testament to their exceptional talent and the impact they had on the team and its fans. Their names will forever be etched in the history of the Chicago Cubs.
