Chicago's Puerto Rican Museum marks a milestone of 25 years; CEO voices concerns about persistent anxieties within the community

In the heart of Humboldt Park, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is celebrating its 25th anniversary. At the helm of this cultural institution is Billy Ocasio, its president and CEO.

Ocasio recently spoke with ABC7 about the impact of the museum on the community. He highlighted the museum's significance, stating that its history is crucial to the identity of the community.

Ocasio expressed concern about ongoing fears within the immigrant community in Chicago, especially regarding potential attempts to erase or falsify Puerto Rican history. To address these concerns, Ocasio and the museum have placed multiple guidelines into place to ensure the preservation and accuracy of Puerto Rican history and culture.

These guidelines have not only been implemented within the museum but have also been shared with other organisations and cultures. Ocasio stated that they learned a lot, and quickly, from this encounter.

The museum offers a wealth of opportunities to learn about Puerto Rican food, art, culture, and history. From the Barrio Arts Festival, which was visited by ICE and Homeland Security, to the daily exhibits and workshops, the museum is a hub of Puerto Rican heritage.

Despite the challenges that may arise, Ocasio is confident that the community is prepared to deal with any issues that may come their way. He has encouraged the community to be vigilant and prepared, emphasising the importance of preserving and celebrating their cultural identity.
