Child-friendly municipality continues to thrive in Landshut
Landshut, a city in southern Germany, is preparing for the development of a second action plan as part of its commitment to maintaining its status as a "Child-Friendly Municipality." The city council made a unanimous decision to extend the seal and launch a further implementation phase in April 2022.
The first action plan, implemented over the past three years, has seen significant success. Measures such as accompanied museum visits for children and young people, the establishment of a youth council, neighbourhood walks in the II renovation area Marienplatz-Freyung, and active involvement in the redesign of playgrounds have been hailed as "good practice" examples for other municipalities.
The city's dedication to fostering a child-friendly environment was recognised by the "Child-Friendly Municipality" association, who awarded Landshut the seal in August 2022. The city was praised as a "lighthouse municipality," setting an example for other cities to follow.
Mayor Alexander Putz expressed his excitement for the further implementation of the collected ideas, hand in hand with the children and young people who live in Landshut. A workshop was held on Wednesday at the Old Barracks to review progress and prepare for the continuation of the action plan. The workshop, moderated by Cornelia Scharf, included members of the steering group, youth council, city youth ring, and the "Child-Friendly Municipality" association.
The content of the planned second action plan focuses on improving child participation, enhancing educational opportunities, and strengthening family support services within the Landshut community. The new action plan is expected to contain up to 15 measures.
The ideas from the future workshop will be used to create the second action plan for the "Child-Friendly Municipality." The city council will make a decision on the extension of the "Child-Friendly Municipality" seal in the spring of 2026, after the final report of the three-year implementation phase, including an extension application, has been submitted at the end of June.
Mayor Putz praised the work and commitment of the participants in the workshop, expressing his gratitude for their contributions to the continued success of the "Child-Friendly Municipality" initiative in Landshut. Municipal employees from various departments and teachers from primary and secondary schools were also present, demonstrating the city's commitment to involving all sectors of the community in the development and implementation of the action plans.
The second action plan will be a testament to Landshut's continued dedication to its youngest residents and will further cement its status as a "lighthouse municipality" in the pursuit of a child-friendly city.
