First Days of School and Road Safety in Brandenburg

As the new school year begins, excitement fills the air in the city of Beelitz, where 177 first graders will start their educational journey on Monday, September 8th. Meanwhile, in Templin, six-year-old Mina Woelk started her schooling a day earlier, at the Goetheschule.

Mina is eager to learn, particularly about reading, English, and music. She is not alone in her excitement, as several of her first-grade classmates knew each other from the "Sparrow's Nest" kindergarten in Templin.

The Woelk family celebrated Mina's first day of school with a barbecue, inviting family and friends. Mina's mother, Marie-Luise Woelk, a singer in the band "Marielle" known for her pop music and schlager songs, was also present.

In a unique twist, Mina's parents arranged a special experience for her first day of school: a drive in a Volvo truck from Ingo Schindler's transport company, as Mina has always been fascinated by her father's work as a truck driver. From Monday, Mina will travel to school by her parents' car.

The state of Brandenburg has launched a banner campaign "Rather safe. Rather live." at the start of the school year, with over 250 schools requesting a total of 500 banners for the campaign. These banners have been hung up in a visible manner in recent days.

The campaign is part of the broader efforts to improve road safety in Brandenburg, which has seen a significant decrease in traffic fatalities. Since the early 1990s, there has been an over 80 percent decrease in traffic fatalities, a testament to the effectiveness of the measures taken.

The state of Brandenburg has legally anchored the "Vision Zero," a commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. As a part of this commitment, starting Monday, police officers from the Uckermark precinct will increase patrols around schools and tricky intersections on school routes.

Despite these positive developments, every severe injury and every traffic fatality is one too many in Brandenburg. To further promote road safety, the "ZeBra" theater is starting its tour at the beginning of the school year, teaching the basic rules of road safety to primary school students in a playful way.

In the Uckermark district of Brandenburg, 917 first-graders will start school on Monday, with 257 in Schwedt, 167 in Prenzlau, 135 in Angermünde, and 82 in Templin. All primary school students, especially first-graders, need special attention from all road users in the coming days and weeks.

In conclusion, the new school year in Brandenburg is marked by excitement, safety measures, and a commitment to ensuring the well-being of its youngest students.
