In a significant shift towards sustainable transportation, China has emerged as the world leader in the development and installation of public electric vehicle charging stations (EVSE). According to the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), China's public EVSE stock accounted for an impressive 56% of the global total by the end of 2021, reaching 1.0 million units.

Shenzhen, a bustling city in southern China, holds the top spot with 125,000 public EVSE units installed, making it the first city in the world to have more than 100,000 public EVSE units. This impressive feat places Shenzhen ahead of any other city globally, with no city outside of China having more than 100,000 public EVSE units installed by the end of 2021.

The Chinese city of Shenzhen is not alone in its significant contribution to the global EVSE infrastructure. Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Beijing each account for 4%, 3%, 3%, and 2% of the total global public EVSE stock respectively. In fact, 17 of the top 20 cities with the greatest number of public EVSE are located in China, with Europe only managing two cities in the top 20.

China's EVSE infrastructure is predominantly made up of both AC and DC Charge Points. As of the end of 2021, China's public EVSE stock was composed of 52% alternating current (AC) EVSE and 48% direct current (DC) EVSE. Interestingly, a substantially higher percentage of China's DC EVSE was compared to Europe (14%) and the US (14%). By the end of 2021, there were more public DC EVSE installations in China than in the rest of the world combined, with China hosting 81% of the world's public DC EVSE installations.

The ICCT's statistical view of public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in China through 2021 also reveals that the top 20 cities with the greatest number of public EVSE at the end of 2021 made up 35% of the global total. This indicates a concentrated yet substantial investment in electric vehicle infrastructure within China's major cities.

In terms of comparative numbers, China's public EVSE stock is 5.7 times greater than that of the US, and 2.3 times greater than Europe's public EVSE stock. This demonstrates China's commitment to electric mobility and its ambition to lead the way in sustainable transportation.

As the world continues to transition towards electric vehicles, China's impressive lead in public EVSE infrastructure is a testament to its commitment to a sustainable future. With Shenzhen as the global leader in public EVSE installations, it is clear that China is setting the pace for other countries to follow.
