China surpasses one million electric vehicle (EV) sales in August 2024, establishing a fresh milestone for the industry.
In a significant shift towards electrification, China's automotive market saw a surge in sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in August 2024. The month marked a historic milestone as NEV sales crossed the 1,000,000 monthly sales mark for the first time.
The best-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) in August was the BYD Han, with an impressive 78,083 units sold. The BYD Song PHEV, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, took the top spot among PHEVs with 61,564 units sold.
The Shenzhen-based domestic brand, BYD Auto, emerged as the company that sold the most newly launched electric cars in China during this period. The BYD Seagull was the best-selling BEV in China, with 46,830 units sold, while the BYD Seal 06 was the second best-selling PHEV, with 32,903 units sold. The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV was the fifth best-selling BEV, with 26,461 units sold.
The BYD Qin L DM was the best-selling PHEV in China, with 35,957 units sold. The Tesla Model Y held the second position among BEVs, with 45,330 units sold. The BYD Yuan Plus was the fourth best-selling BEV, with 27,046 units sold, and the BYD Song PLUS DM was the third best-selling PHEV, with 28,380 units sold.
NEV sales grew by 16.9% from July 2024, when 878,424 units were sold. Compared to the same period last year, China's NEV sales are 16.9% higher year-to-date. On a year-over-year basis, NEV sales increased by 43.4% from the 529,566 units sold in August 2023.
Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles accounted for 46.2% of sales in August 2024, a substantial decrease from 62.7% in August 2023. This trend indicates a continued shift towards electric vehicles.
BEVs accounted for 80.8% of total NEV exports from China in August 2024, with China exporting 99,000 passenger NEVs during the month, a 23.7% increase year-over-year.
In August 2024, more than half of all vehicle sales in China were NEVs, accounting for 53.8% of total passenger vehicle sales. BEVs alone accounted for 30.6% of all vehicle sales, and PHEVs made up 23.3%.
The surge in NEV sales in China is a testament to the country's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation. The record-breaking sales figures for August 2024 underscore the growing popularity and acceptance of electric vehicles in the Chinese market.
