Chinese retail juggernaut JD.com initiates Joybuy platform within German borders
JD.com Launches Joybuy in Germany, Marking a New Era in Ultra-Fast Delivery
JD.com, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has officially launched its European retail platform, Joybuy, in Germany on August 23, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in JD.com's European expansion strategy, which centers on the pending acquisition of CECONOMY AG.
The German platform launch coincides with JD.com's broader European retail strategy. JD.com registered Jingdong Retail Germany and Jingdong Holding Germany in the German trade register in August 2025, providing a legal foundation for operations.
Joybuy offers ultra-fast delivery services to German customers. Orders placed before 23:00 are eligible for next-day delivery, with delivery completed by 15:00 the following day. For even faster delivery, same-day delivery is available for orders completed before 11:00 AM, with delivery guaranteed by 23:00 the same day.
The geographic coverage for Joybuy's initial launch targets specific metropolitan areas across multiple countries. In Germany, this includes cities like Cologne, Duesseldorf, and North Rhine-Westphalia. Other targeted cities include Greater London, Luton, Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom, Greater Paris in France, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Delft in the Netherlands.
Product categories on Joybuy span multiple consumer segments, including electronics, household appliances, home furnishings, beauty products, international specialty foods, groceries and beverages, pharmacy and toy products. This comprehensive offering positions Joybuy as a full-assortment online retail market, a significant departure from JD.com's previous European approach.
The timeline for regulatory approvals for the CECONOMY acquisition extends through the first half of 2026, allowing parallel Joybuy market development during the review periods. Customer data migration from the Ochama platform to Joybuy began on August 15, 2025.
On July 31, 2025, JD.com announced a voluntary takeover offer for CECONOMY AG at €4.60 per share. The planned acceptance period for the MediaMarkt/Saturn takeover offer is scheduled for early 2026.
Joybuy's German launch represents the culmination of Joybuy's European brand transformation, following its operation under the Ochama brand across 25 European countries since 2022. However, there is currently no publicly available information about planned cities in Belgium for the upcoming launch of the Joybuy platform.
In summary, JD.com's launch of Joybuy in Germany marks a significant step forward in the company's European expansion strategy. With ultra-fast delivery services, a comprehensive product offering, and a focus on specific metropolitan areas across multiple countries, Joybuy is poised to make a significant impact in the European e-commerce market. The regulatory review period for the CECONOMY acquisition, expected in Q4 2025, and the planned acceptance period for the MediaMarkt/Saturn takeover offer, scheduled for early 2026, will provide further insights into JD.com's long-term strategy in Europe.
