Chloe Zhao, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, unveils her interpretation of Shakespeare's sorrow in 'Hamnet' at the Toronto film premiere.

In a departure from her previous work, acclaimed director Chloé Zhao presents her latest film, "Hamnet," a poignant drama that delves into the personal life of William Shakespeare. The film, produced by renowned figures such as Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment and Sam Mendes, had its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

"Hamnet" tells the heart-wrenching story of Shakespeare and his wife Agnes, as they grapple with the loss of their 11-year-old son. The film, an adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel, portrays Shakespeare not as a literary genius, but as a father and husband.

Director Zhao mentioned that "Hamnet" has a different style compared to her previous work, with no sunsets or magic hour. Instead, the film focuses on intimate and still moments, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of the Bard and his family.

The film is set in Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare spends his early years. William Shakespeare falls in love with Agnes and raises his family in the story. Director Zhao is exploring a new landscape in 16th-century England for her film.

"Hamnet" stars Jessie Buckley as Agnes and Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare. The film shows moments of joy in Shakespeare's life as a father, as well as the challenges he faces in dealing with the loss of his son.

Filming "Hamnet" proved to be a challenge for Zhao, as she had to keep the action confined to one stage and one room. Despite the constraints, the film promises to be a moving and intimate portrayal of a beloved historical figure.

Paul Mescal, who plays Shakespeare, commented on the unique cast of the film, saying, "Having two Irish people and a Chinese woman in charge of a quintessentially British story is exciting." Chloe Zhao, who won several awards for her 2020 drama "Nomadland," is sure to bring her signature style to this new project.

The release date for "Hamnet" in movie theatres is scheduled for late 2025. The film's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival was a star-studded event, with Chloe Zhao, Jessie Buckley, and Paul Mescal walking the red carpet.
