The fishing world in Canada has been buzzing with excitement following the triumph of brothers Cory and Chris Johnston at the Canadian International Sport Fishing (CISA) Kingston Open. This latest victory comes after a string of successful seasons for the Johnston brothers, who have established themselves as formidable competitors on both the Canadian and American pro bass circuits.
The three-day event, which began on Friday with 66 teams, saw the Johnstons finish strong, securing a five-fish limit that weighed 26.75 pounds on the final day. Their impressive performance earned them the first place and a $50,000 prize.
Cory Johnston, who also won the Thousand Island Open last month in Kingston with his father, Lynn, has had a remarkable run of victories around 2021. He made history in 2020 by becoming the first Canadian to win an Elite Series tournament, also on the St. Lawrence River. This year, he added another Elite Series victory to his name, further cementing his place among Canada's top anglers.
Chris Johnston, on the other hand, has been consistently impressive, capturing two events last year, including the season-ending tournament on the St. Lawrence River. He completed the '25 Elite Series season with a second straight overall title.
The Johnstons' success at the CISA Kingston Open was not without competition. Evan Kung, from Pickering, Ont., and his partner Jacob Kung finished second overall, while Danny McGarry, from Newcastle, Ont., and his partner Spender Newell claimed third place. The tournament also featured other Elite Series competitors such as Cooper Gallant, Matt Robertson, Jacob Powroznik, and Bob Izumi.
The Johnstons compete as individuals on the Elite Series, a pro bass circuit in the United States. Their win at the CISA Kingston Open adds to their impressive resume, which includes Kung and Ryan Clark, of Whitby, Ont., winning last year's Thousand Island Open, and Chris Johnston's victory in a Major League Fishing tournament last month on the St. Lawrence River in Massena, NY.
As the fishing season continues, the Johnston brothers are poised to make even more waves in the sport. With their combined skills and determination, they are undoubtedly ones to watch in the world of competitive fishing.
