Citizens in Russia urged to use masks as safeguard against fresh coronavirus strain
In a recent development, Russian epidemiologist Gennady Onishchenko, a member of the Russian Academy of Education, has issued a warning about the new coronavirus variant "Status". According to Onishchenko, the variant could potentially infect more Russians as the number of cases is on the rise.
The new variant was first detected in Moscow back in May. By the end of July, "Status" accounted for 22 percent of all viral diseases in Russia, with a total of 384 cases recorded as of August 23.
Onishchenko emphasized the importance of following preventive measures such as wearing masks, maintaining good sleep and nutrition, dressing appropriately, and getting vaccinated against the flu. He also urged the population to get vaccinated against the flu as a protective measure against the new coronavirus variant "Status".
The flu vaccine is currently available in Russian regions. Specialists are advising society to wear masks for protection against the new variant.
In addition to the common symptoms such as fever, weakness, chills, nasal congestion, dry cough, and headaches, some cases of the new variant "Status" have also reported loss of smell, sore throat, and abdominal discomfort, according to "Kommersant".
Meanwhile, in other news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded Kellogg with the Order of Merit I degree. Also, the star of "The Sopranos", Jerry Adler, passed away at the age of 96.
In a separate development, scientists in the US discovered a new coronavirus, HKU5-CoV-2, which they believe may spread worldwide in the near future. However, as of now, the focus remains on managing the spread of the "Status" variant in Russia.
