Citizens of Düsseldorf receive a base for sustainability from Stadtsparkasse

Celebration typically involves receiving gifts, but Düsseldorf City Savings Bank has an unusual custom – giving gifts instead. For its 150th anniversary, the institution took a turn to act as the giver.

Düsseldorf City Sparkasse is making a significant contribution to the city's sustainability goals by establishing a 20 million euro Sustainability Foundation for its 200th anniversary. The foundation, which was officially recognized by the regional government and presented on 21 February, is a gift to the citizens of Düsseldorf and Monheim am Rhein.

The foundation's charter outlines its mission to promote sustainable commitment and climate-friendly development in the region. It will support over 400 projects with more than 3 million euros, following the models of the Eissporthalle Foundation and the Art and Culture Foundation.

The Sustainability Foundation will focus on local implementation of projects, allowing people, associations, and organizations to realize their own ideas and contribute to achieving climate goals. Eligible institutions to submit funding applications include non-profit organizations, associations, and institutions operating in the Düsseldorf region that promote sustainability projects.

One of the key initiatives of the foundation is a model project for citizen participation in sustainable regional development. Moderated workshops will be held, with 50,000 euros allocated in 2025 and an additional 100,000 euros in 2026. In 2025, 100,000 euros will also be allocated for educational projects promoting sustainable everyday life.

Another significant area of focus for the foundation is the development of new potential through innovations and the integration of science and practice. Around 60,000 euros are earmarked for this purpose, potentially collaborating with Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences or Heinrich Heine University.

The foundation's website is now online, allowing the first applications to be submitted. The first approvals are expected by summer. Düsseldorf City Works are available as partners for energy efficiency projects, and funding gaps can be filled with co-financing from other donors.

In addition, an additional 150,000 euros will be used to fund technical solutions for non-profit organizations aiming to reduce CO2 and achieve climate neutrality. The income from the foundation capital will finance the projects, and the capital can also be used for larger projects.

Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller emphasized that the new foundation aligns with Düsseldorf's sustainability goals, while Dr. Stefan Dahm, Chairman of the city savings bank, emphasized that the region has the potential to become a model for sustainable urban development, requiring the participation of every citizen. The Sustainability Foundation's commitment is expected to have a positive impact far beyond the anniversary.

With around 360 different foundations in Düsseldorf alone, the Sustainability Foundation adds to the city's rich foundation landscape, further strengthening its commitment to sustainability and climate-friendly development.
