City allows vegetation growth along the city wall for safety purposes.

The city of Greifswald has embarked on a significant tree care project, marking the first time all trees lining the Greifswalder Wall are being cared for simultaneously. This comprehensive initiative, aimed at maintaining the health and safety of the trees and the people using the promenade, is being carried out by Forstbetrieb Heydenholz GmbH, with an estimated cost of around 140,000 euros.

The work is being conducted in an environmentally friendly manner, taking into account occupied bird nests and other wildlife habitats. Around 20 old trees will have their crown safety devices, such as cables or belts, renewed or adjusted to stabilize heavy or damaged branches. The goal is to keep the trees healthy and prevent branches from falling off uncontrolled.

The city is assessing whether some trees showing signs of damage, such as fungal infection or decay, need to be removed by external experts. However, no trees are being felled at this time. The main work involves gentle pruning, clearing pedestrian and cycle paths, removing dead wood, and eliminating suckers on the trunk.

The tree care work is being conducted as a so-called moving worksite, resulting in only minor restrictions. The Wall Promenade remains accessible throughout the work, ensuring that pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists can continue to use the area with ease.

The Umfassungswarte Greifswalder Wall and the trees involved in this project are maintained by the local municipal park authority or a designated environmental organization responsible for urban green spaces. Regular inspections by the city's tree inspectors are being carried out to ensure the quality of the work.

The city asks for understanding regarding the ongoing work and thanks the public for their patience. The tree care work is an ongoing measure to maintain the safety and health of the trees and the people using the promenade, and it is being done to ensure safety for all users of the promenade.

Work is currently underway to care for approximately 700 trees along the Greifswalder Wall Promenade, including those in Crendor Park and Goethegrund. The city aims to retain as many trees as possible and is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the Greifswalder Wall for future generations.
