City officials arranged an enriching, holiday week for Ukrainian children

In the heart of August, 15 Ukrainian children and teenagers embarked on a week-long vacation in the picturesque town of Dormagen, Germany. The journey, organised by the local community centre, was made possible with the generous support of donation funds from the Dormagen community.

The young visitors, aged between 7 and 16, found their home at the Hotel Ragusa, conveniently located at the market square. Accompanied by two caretakers and supported by an interpreter, they immersed themselves in a series of engaging activities designed to provide an unforgettable experience.

The programme was packed with a variety of experiences. The children and teenagers visited the awe-inspiring Cologne Cathedral, explored the charming city of Zons, and even got creative in the VHS studio, where they tried their hands at ceramics and acrylic painting.

A trip to the Cologne Zoo, cooking and waffle baking sessions, a reception at the town hall, a barbecue and games afternoon at the children and youth centre Hackenbroich, and a visit to the Norbert Gymnasium Knechtsteden were also on the itinerary. The encounters with Ukrainian students at the Norbert Gymnasium added a touch of cultural exchange to their adventure.

The week ended on a high note with a stay at the Raphaelshaus. As they bid farewell to Dormagen, the children and teenagers returned to Germany on Wednesday, September 3. On Thursday, September 4, during their return journey, the group stopped in Krakow, where they were received by the local shooting club.

This holiday project brought joy and excitement to these young Ukrainian lives, offering them a much-needed break from the challenges they face in their hometown of Bajkiwzi near Ternopil. The warm welcome and engaging activities organised by the municipal department of children, youth, family, and school in Dormagen, and the generosity of the Dormagen citizens, will undoubtedly leave lasting memories for these children and teenagers.
