City unveils Butscha Square and Atelier, experiencing renovation milestones
The city is inviting citizens to explore the Zanders area on September 13, 2025, as part of the Day of Open Heritage. Registration for the tours is now open on the city's website from August 14, 2025.
The event, themed around "Worth-full: Priceless or Irreplaceable," aims to rethink historic industrial architecture and preserve the cultural and identity-forming value of the area. The motto is a testament to the transformation of the Zanders area into a sustainable future.
Visitors can expect exciting tours, an information event on the current status of the development planning, and the opening of the Butscha Square. The square, centrally located in the future district, near the Rail Park, the Forum building, and the listed power station, will be blessed by a representative of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Two themed tours will be offered: "Urban Development on Zanders - Industrial History Meets Urban Planning" and "Path of Coal." The first tour showcases how protected industrial buildings can be sustainably preserved and transformed for new uses within an urban quarter. The second tour delves into the significance and development of energy production on Zanders.
Gasthaus Paas will be present with a pop-up beer garden and food selection at the Old Central Workshop, where a socio-cultural center for the new quarter will be created. The hip-hop project "Create Hip-Hop EmPOWERment" of the KREA youth club will perform at the opening.
A partnership shuffle with Tanja Heesen, Heinz D. Haun, Norbert Bruchhagen, and a project choir will also take place. Since August 1, 2025, nine local artists have been working in the nine provisional ateliers on the third floor of the F260 workshop building on the Zanders site. Their names are not specified in the available information.
Mayor Frank Stein will visit the atelier floor, where local artists have temporary studios since August 1st. The artwork, located on the cleared pedestal of the steam locomotive "Emma," is officially gifted to the city by Wolfgang Heuwinkel.
The event will take place from 11 AM to 6 PM. However, interested citizens can visit the ateliers and take guided tours from 1:30 p.m. The number of participants is limited, so it's advisable to register early.
The Old Central Workshop will be accessible throughout the day, and visitors can navigate, rotate, and zoom through the event using a mobile app. The tours are suitable for participants aged 12 and above and require sturdy footwear, as they are not barrier-free.
Join us on September 13 to discover the history and future of this key location. Let's celebrate the preservation of our industrial heritage and its transformation into a sustainable urban quarter.
