Music Festival "Jamel rocks the Förster" Proceeds Peacefully Amidst Controversies

The music festival "Jamel rocks the Förster" in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern concluded successfully, attracting around 3,500 attendees. The event, which featured well-known artists like the Dead Kennedys and Kraftklub, was preceded by a series of court decisions and controversies.

At the heart of the disputes was Tino Schomann, the CDU district administrator (Landrat) of Nordwestmecklenburg, where the festival takes place. Schomann found himself in the midst of a heated debate with Campino, the frontman of the Dead Kennedys, over fees and an alcohol ban demanded by the Nordwestmecklenburg district. These issues were later overturned by the Higher Administrative Court.

Schomann defended himself against Campino's criticism, stating it was a targeted discrediting of state action. He emphasised that as a responsible authority, he does not decide based on sympathy, but on law and order. The CDU state leadership sharply criticized this statement made on an official government channel.

Campino, however, expressed discontent about a general euphoria of victory in AfD and far-right circles. An Instagram post by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state representation in Berlin sparked discussions, criticizing new bureaucratic requirements of the Nordwestmecklenburg district.

The organizers of the festival, Birgit and Horst Lohmeyer, have been standing up against right-wing extremist harassment in the village since 2007. In 2015, unknown persons set fire to a barn belonging to the Lohmeyers. Despite the controversies, the festival proceeded peacefully as expected, according to the police.

The Dead Kennedys received thunderous applause during their performance, with Campino expressing joy at being back at the festival. Other acts at the weekend included Paula Hartmann, Betterov, Dota, and Hinterlandgang.

The assembly law applies to the festival due to its registration as a political gathering for the first time. The artist couple use the festival as a platform to voice their opposition against right-wing extremism in the region. Despite the controversies, the music festival "Jamel rocks the Förster" once again proved to be a significant cultural event in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
