Cleaning up the train tracks to Riedlingen imminently
On the 27th of July, a tragic incident occurred on the Donautalbahn as a diesel-powered tram derailed, resulting in three fatalities and dozens of injuries. Among the victims were a trainee driver with the Bahn, a 70-year-old passenger, and an unidentified individual.
The accident, which took place in the town of Riedlingen, proved to be a challenging rescue operation due to the rough terrain. Emergency services worked tirelessly to attend to the injured, with more than 30 passengers requiring medical attention, some critically.
The cause of the derailment is believed to be a landslide triggered by a heavy storm with heavy rain in the region. As a result, signal cables were damaged, and both the cables and the affected track will need significant repairs. Approximately 300 meters of track and nearly 700 meters of rails will be exchanged, and over 500 concrete sleepers will be replaced.
Low-loaders were used to transport the derailed wagons away from the accident site, while partially destroyed wagons were lifted using a crane. The recovery efforts have been ongoing, with a sense of determination and resilience among the emergency services personnel.
In the aftermath of the incident, many volunteer firefighters and emergency services personnel sought psychosocial emergency care to process the events. The organisation providing this assistance is the rescue service offering "psychosocial emergency care" (psychosoziale Notfallversorgung).
Schools in the affected area have announced that they will resume on November 3rd, and the affected train line is expected to resume traffic by early November. The community remains strong, coming together to support one another during this difficult time.
