Johannes Friedrich, the former evangelical bishop of Bavaria, has passed away at the age of 77 in Nuremberg. The news was confirmed by a spokesperson of the Bavarian Church.

Born in Bielefeld in 1948, Johannes Friedrich began his ministry as a student pastor in Nuremberg. From there, he went on to serve as pastor and provost of the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem. In 1991, he returned to Nuremberg to serve as dean, a position he held until his election as bishop in 1999.

During his tenure as bishop, which lasted until 2011, Johannes Friedrich was an ecumenical bridge-builder. He was involved in the Christian-Jewish dialogue and the dialogue with Muslim believers. The co-founders of the Bavarian Alliance for Tolerance, which he was also one of the founders, are not explicitly listed in the search results provided.

Current bishop Christian Kopp paid tribute to his predecessor, stating, "Johannes Friedrich lived out how Christian faith grants the freedom to shape life well." He admired the way Johannes Friedrich worked, describing it as lovingly, attentively, and goal-oriented. According to Kopp, Johannes Friedrich stood up for a church right in the world.

After completing his twelve-year term as bishop, Johannes Friedrich continued to serve as a village pastor in Middle Franconia until his retirement. Christian Kopp noted that Johannes Friedrich's personal relationship with God was the driving force behind his work.

In 2010, the Ecumenical Church Assembly took place in Munich during Johannes Friedrich's tenure. This event brought together Christian leaders from around the world to discuss and address pressing issues facing the Church.

Johannes Friedrich will be remembered as a dedicated servant of the Church and a champion of tolerance and dialogue. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of clergy and laity alike.
