New United Nations University Hub to Address Climate Change and Resource Scarcity

The Technical University of Dresden (TUD) and the United Nations University (UNU) have announced the founding of a new center, the UNU-Hub Climate Resilience and Sustainable Technology (CREST). This groundbreaking initiative aims to promote innovative learning programs for resource efficiency and climate protection in an international context, bridging the gap between science and practice to ensure that technological innovations have a tangible impact.

The announcement was made at the Dresden Nexus Conference 2025, a unique platform for sustainable research networking that attracted participants from over 75 countries. Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University, expressed a commitment to expand partnerships and turn knowledge into action. Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of the TUD, shared her delight at taking this important step, strengthening international cooperation to develop solutions for human-induced climate change and the increasing scarcity of natural resources, especially water.

Prof. Jürgen Stamm and Dr. André Lindner have been tasked with leading the development of forward-looking solutions at CREST. The solutions developed at this hub are intended to improve the lives of people worldwide, focusing on climate-resilient infrastructures, adaptive water management, and circular technologies.

The UNU hub will cooperate with political decision-makers, companies, and communities, serving as a central hub for interdisciplinary exchange between different continents. Its goal is to collectively address the challenges of climate change, promoting innovative learning programs and interdisciplinary research to ensure a sustainable future.

Future engineers and political decision-makers will be trained at the CREST hub, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle the complex issues associated with climate change and resource scarcity. The Dresden Nexus Conference 2025, which took place from April 8 to 10, 2025, marked a significant milestone in this endeavour, serving as a forum for discussing innovative concepts for sustainable resource use.

As the UNU hub sets out on its mission, it is poised to make a substantial contribution to the global fight against climate change and resource scarcity, ensuring that technological innovations have a real-world impact and improving the lives of people worldwide.
