Coalition Partners Seek Enhanced Role, Prioritizing Social Security and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within Joint Governance
The Bavarian Social Democratic Party (SPD) is shifting its focus towards addressing the concerns of the middle class, as urged by its chairwoman, Ronja Endres, and the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD chairman, Achim Post.
Endres emphasised the need for the welfare state to primarily benefit those who work hard and pay taxes regularly, with a specific focus on the middle class. She expressed concern about the abuse of the welfare state and highlighted issues such as late trains and doctor shortages as key areas that need immediate attention.
Meanwhile, Post called for the Union and SPD to allow each other to profile themselves more strongly, and for the federal government to avoid unnecessary conflicts, such as those over the election of federal constitutional court judges. He believes that voters should be able to recognise what the individual coalition partners stand for.
Post also outlined the core points that the SPD should focus on, including social security, investments, and fighting for jobs.
The call for the SPD to pay more attention to the middle class comes from Arif Taşdelen, who made this proposal during the SPD-initiated parliamentary hearing "Public Service – Nachwuchsinitiative Bayern 2040" latest by March 2025.
Endres stated that the future of the SPD is at stake, and the party needs to send a signal that it understands the concerns of the middle class. She reiterated her commitment to making the middle class a key focus for the Bavarian SPD.
Achim Post, who is also the chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD, is advocating for increased opportunities to define the profiles of the coalition partners in the black-red federal government.
In conclusion, both Endres and Post are urging the SPD to prioritise the concerns of the middle class and to function effectively as a coalition government, avoiding unnecessary conflicts and clearly defining its policy points.
