Collaboration Between Forvia Hella and Tau Motors in the Development of Electric Vehicle Charging Technology
International automotive supplier Forvia Hella has teamed up with Tau Motors for a strategic development cooperation focused on electric vehicle (EV) charging technology. The partnership, which was announced recently, expands Forvia Hella's portfolio of high-performance key components for electrification.
The joint project aims to produce a virtually isolated onboard charger (viOBC) for series production within the next 2-3 years. This innovative technology is set to revolutionise EV charging, offering a significant step forward in the industry.
The viOBC, designed by Forvia Hella and Tau Motors, is expected to eliminate the need for a transformer, reducing the space and volume required for a vehicle's onboard charger (OBC) by up to 50%. This reduction in size and weight is a major advantage, with the viOBC having a weight reduction of around 33% compared to traditional onboard chargers.
Moreover, the viOBC boasts a high power density, with up to 7kW per litre of installation volume. This high power density enables energy management in vehicles, including vehicle-to-grid integration through bidirectional charging.
The collaboration between Forvia Hella and Tau Motors combines high-voltage and power electronics, industrialisation capabilities, software-defined technology platform, and knowledge in power electronics and product design. An investment in Tau was made through Hella Ventures as part of the partnership.
Joerg Weisgerber, Forvia Hella Electronics managing director, stated that the partnership takes onboard charging to the next level and creates a product that sets new standards in power density. Further details about the project, including technical specifications and potential applications, are likely to be revealed as the development progresses.
Forvia Hella, previously a part of the Hella Group, is now a listed entity following the acquisition of a controlling stake by Faurecia in January 2022, leading to the introduction of the combined Group's new name, Forvia. The companies behind the joint project to develop a virtually isolated onboard charging station with high power density and energy efficiency include AT&S, which collaborates with partners from industry and research to develop semiconductor modules for onboard chargers and inverters for electric vehicles, using gallium nitride technology to make these components smaller and lighter.
