Collaborative Initiative for Leaders Gets Off the Ground

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable forest management, a new coordination center has been established to improve natural water retention in forests across municipal borders. The Cologne Regional Government has approved the project, which aims to implement sustainable solutions for forests and the region.

The center, funded by a joint funding application by the steering committees of the LEADER regions Voreifel - Die Bäche der Swist and Zülpicher Börde, will receive 70% of its funding from Leader funding, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the European Union. The remaining 30% will be provided by the participating municipalities and the Rhein-Sieg district.

The center's role is to identify, plan, and implement measures for improving water retention in forests. These interventions aim to mitigate heavy rainfall events and make forests more resilient to drought, forest fires, and heat. The focus of the center's work is on small, natural interventions such as permeable dams, adapted path structures, and natural retention basins.

The project is significant for flood, heavy rain, nature, and climate protection in the region. By improving water retention in forests, the center hopes to reduce the risk of flooding and protect the local environment from the effects of extreme weather events.

The center will connect various actors, including forest owners, forest management associations, specialist authorities, universities, and citizen initiatives. This collaboration is crucial for the success of the project, as it allows for the bundling of existing concepts and ideas, and the initiation of new measures.

The center's work is significant for flood protection, climate protection, and the future of local forests. The project emphasizes the importance of a healthy forest for regional climate protection, including CO2 storage, cooling the surroundings, regenerating groundwater, and stabilizing the landscape water balance.

The project is planned to run for three years. The new coordination center will be responsible for implementing measures for improving water retention in forests, making a significant contribution to sustainable forest management in the Cologne region.

Despite the availability of search results, information about the cooperating partners of the newly founded coordination center for strengthening wetland facilities in forest regions could not be found at the time of writing.

In conclusion, the establishment of this coordination center marks an important step towards sustainable forest management and climate protection in the Cologne region. By improving water retention in forests, the center aims to protect the local environment from the effects of extreme weather events, while also promoting a healthy forest ecosystem.
