Collaborative Technical Institute Established by Toyota and Jinbei Celebrates 3 Decades of "Nurturing Talent"

In 1990, the Liaoning Toyota Jinbei Technician Institute, a pioneering academy for automobile technician training, was established in Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning Province in Northeast China. The institute was a joint venture between Toyota and Shenyang Jinbei Automotive Co., Ltd., born out of a shared vision to respond to China's demand for advanced automotive technical education and industry collaboration.

At the time, the automobile market in China was relatively small, selling only 550,000 vehicles. Toyota, however, had a clear intention: to support the development of talent for the automotive industry. The academy's inaugural class had around 100 students a year, a number that has since grown to over 4,000 students. Over 35,000 alumni have since graduated, many of whom are working for various companies, primarily in the automotive industry, to support "monozukuri" in China.

Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda, then President and now Honorary Chairman of Toyota, attended the completion ceremony of the institute in 1991. The institute marked its 30th anniversary on September 1, 2020. To celebrate this milestone, Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota, presented his calligraphy of the phrase "不忘初心" (bú wàng chūxīn), meaning "never forget the original intentions."

Akio Toyoda, who served as the first head of the China region group in 2005, has expressed a goal for Toyota to become a "best-in-town" company and to create a relationship of mutual appreciation. Toyota's founding philosophy is "monozukuri (manufacturing) is about making people," emphasizing the importance of nurturing people who drive manufacturing. Toyota aims to make cars while making people in the community happy, with a focus on nurturing talented people who can help achieve this goal.

One of the institute's most notable contributions was the birth of the "Haise," a Jinbei-brand version of the Hiace, in November 1988. The "Haise" gained popularity as a microbus due to its high quality and performance, and helped Jinbei to become the largest manufacturer in its class/category.

As of 2019, the volume of vehicle sales in China is now 50 times that amount, selling about 25.8 million units. Toyota will continue its endeavors, taking the intention to heart, as expressed by the phrase "不忘初心" (bú wàng chūxīn). The institute's legacy of technician training and commitment to monozukuri will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of the automotive industry in China.
