Virginia Tech has announced the dismissal of Hysier Miller from their men's basketball team, with the school citing "circumstances prior to his enrolment at Virginia Tech" as the reason. The sudden move comes amidst an ongoing investigation into suspicious gambling activity involving the Temple University basketball team.

Miller, a former player at Temple University, had transferred to Virginia Tech earlier this year. His tenure with the Hokies, however, was short-lived as he had not played a game with the team, as the season has not yet begun.

The investigation, which was reported by Sports Illustrated in March 2024, centres around allegations of illegal gambling and point-shaving schemes during games. Miller is suspected of participating by influencing game outcomes or facilitating bets.

Before his departure from Temple, Miller had an impressive run, particularly in the championship game of the Temple Owls' conference tournament where he scored 32 points. However, his performance in the UAB game, prior to his transfer, was less impressive. He made three of nine shots, finishing with eight points, 1 rebound, and 3 turnovers.

In a game that was flagged by gambling monitoring company US Integrity, Miller's shooting percentage was about the same as his average, but his three-point shooting was better. He made five out of nine three-point attempts, scoring 19 points, with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 turnover.

It's worth noting that the Temple Owls lost the game to Tulsa, 72-67, despite being a 5.5-point favourite. This loss came after a Cinderella run in the conference tournament, where they reached the finals before losing to UAB.

Despite Miller's impressive statistical performance in the UAB game, he did not average assists in that game, unlike his usual average of 4 assists per game.

Before his transfer to Virginia Tech, Miller was not featured in an article previewing the season on the university's official athletic website, nor was he mentioned in a video about the team's guards on social media.

The cause for Miller's dismissal from Virginia Tech is not publicly known at this time. The university has not issued any further statements regarding the matter.

The gambling investigation into the Temple Owls basketball games started prior to the suspicious betting activity that was flagged by US Integrity. The company had been monitoring Temple basketball games leading up to the investigation.

As the investigation continues, more details about the alleged gambling activities and the involvement of players such as Hysier Miller may come to light. For now, the future of Miller's basketball career remains unclear.
