Commemorate, Socialize, Recall: Approximately 1500 attendees at the family gathering in Park Schöntal

On a sunny Sunday in July, the city of Aschaffenburg hosted the "Picknick in Schoental Park" family festival. The event, which took place on the 13th of July, 2020, was a collaborative effort between the city and various associations, integration guides, and local groups, aiming to revitalize Schoental Park as a place of interaction.

Approximately 1500 adults and children attended the festival, which offered a variety of activities. Picnicking, music, artistry, theater, and remembrance were all on the agenda, with events designed by the Circus Theo d'Or of the Dalberg-Gymnasium, Theater Einfach Riesig, McKennas Theater, and "Geraldino & die Plomster".

The festival was not just a celebration of community and culture, but also a symbolic reclamation of the park. The site of a tragic knife attack in January 2020 was a poignant reminder of the importance of standing against exclusion and violence. Mayor Jürgen Herzing stated that the festival was a way to fill the park with life once more, while also remembering the victims.

To cater to families with special needs, the Hans-Weinberger-Akademie Aschaffenburg provided care at a designated rest area. Local churches offered conversations and a "Puzzle of Hope" for children and adults. The Moroccan communities set up mint tea, pastries, and craft activities for children at the blue piano, adding a touch of cultural diversity to the event.

The "Picknick in Schoental Park" was not just a one-off event. It was part of a larger initiative to foster a sense of community and inclusivity in Aschaffenburg. The picnic in Schönthal Park on Sunday, July 13, was organized by the Migrants for Migrants e.V., One Day e.V., GESTA e.V., MIZ e.V., along with the instructors and family support centers of the city of Aschaffenburg. The event was a testament to the power of community spirit and the healing power of shared experiences.
