Commemoration Event and Anniversary Calendar for the Centennial of Demise
On Saturday, September 13th, at 3 PM, the museum will host an extraordinary event in honour of the renowned photographer, Thomas Backens. Born in Flensburg on March 24, 1859, Backens's life and work will be celebrated in a moving tribute.
The event will feature a 15-minute film by Bernd Steincke about the Backens family, providing a personal insight into the life of this remarkable man. The film will be musically framed by "De Windmoel", enhancing the emotional depth of the narrative.
Thomas Backens's work, particularly his documentation of life in a specific region and his captivating images of the construction of the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, will be the focus of the exhibition. Beate Meißner will give an introduction at the event, setting the stage for a fascinating exploration of Backens's life and work.
The exhibition will run from September 13th until November 2nd, with the museum open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday during the exhibition, from 2:30 PM to 6 PM.
In addition to the exhibition, a 2026 calendar featuring historical photos by Thomas Backens will be published in conjunction with the event. This calendar will serve as a beautiful reminder of Backens's legacy and the lasting impact of his work.
Sadly, Thomas Backens passed away on May 25, but his memory lives on through his photographs. The director of the film shown at the exhibition event on September 13, 2022, is Wim Wenders, ensuring a poignant and thought-provoking tribute to this extraordinary man.
