Commemorative event on September 14th: Essen's monuments will be accessible for public visitation
On the 14th of September, 2025, Essen will open its doors to reveal a treasure trove of cultural heritage as part of the nationwide Day of Open Heritage, coordinated by the German Heritage Foundation.
One of the highlights of the day will be the "The Voice of the Shtetl" concert, taking place at the Old Synagogue at 5 PM. The Old Synagogue, a house of Jewish culture and a cultural meeting place run by the city portal, is located in the former synagogue building of the Jewish community in Essen. Its architectural masterpiece by architect Edmund Körner is one of the largest synagogue buildings in Europe from the early 20th century.
The Old Synagogue will offer guided tours of its exhibition every hour on the Day of Open Heritage. In addition, visitors can explore the fascinating history of Burg Altendorf, the Old Synagogue, Schloss Borbeck ensemble, Villa Hügel, and the Grugabad, as the Lower Heritage Authority will present findings about Burg Altendorf, including recent excavations that have uncovered and documented two buildings in front of the main castle.
Schloss Borbeck will also be open from 1 PM to 6 PM, offering various guided tours and activities for children and youth. For more information about the program for Essen's heritage sites, refer to the Day_of_Open_Heritage_2025.pdf flyer.
