In the heart of Solingen, a small square named Fronhof became the solemn site for a memorial event on the anniversary of a devastating knife attack that took place one year ago. The attack, which occurred near a stage at the Solingen city festival, claimed the lives of three innocent people and left many more injured.

Hundreds gathered to honour the victims and pay their respects, with hundreds of candlelights illuminating the evening sky. The memorial event was held on the Fronhof, where a memorial plaque now stands as a reminder of the tragic event. The plaque is located in front of the evangelical city church in Solingen.

During the memorial service, a minute of silence was observed, providing a moment of reflection and remembrance for all those affected by the attack. Ulrike Spengler-Reffgen, chairperson of the Solingen Catholic Council, spoke at the event, expressing her condolences and reiterating the council's commitment to support the victims' families and the community in the aftermath of the attack.

Ilka Werner, superintendent of the evangelical church district, urged attendees to take a moment of peace, asking everyone to remember the victims and pray for their families. Mayor Tim Kurzbach (SPD) and Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) also thanked the many first responders and emergency services for their bravery and quick action during the attack.

As the trial against Issa al H., accused of terrorism and responsible for the Solingen knife attack in August 2024, is currently ongoing at the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf, no specific trial date has been announced. However, no comment has been made by Issa al H. on the accusation of IS membership.

Ulrike Spengler-Reffgen promised that the council will continue to listen to each other and be there for each other during the trial's proceedings and beyond. As the community comes together to remember and heal, the memorial event served as a poignant reminder of the importance of unity and resilience in the face of adversity. After the remembrance, people placed their candles in front of the memorial plaque, creating a beautiful and moving display of solidarity and remembrance.
