Commission's Role in Crafting Report on Community's Environmental Policy Implementation

The Giessen District is set to host the Hazardous Waste Mobile Tour once again in August, with the tour stopping at every larger village and all towns within the district. The tour, which occurs twice a year, provides an opportunity for both businesses and private individuals to dispose of hazardous waste responsibly.

The tour's schedule can be found on the Giessen District website and the Giessen District Waste App. Business owners can dispose of up to 200 kg of hazardous waste free of charge at the AWZ in Giessen on the first Wednesday of each month from 9 to 11 am, with a handover certificate provided. Private individuals can dispose of up to 100 kilograms of hazardous waste free of charge as well.

Acceptable items for disposal include paint, wood preservatives, batteries, adhesives, energy-saving lamps, fluorescent tubes, filled spray cans, plant protection products, expired medications, e-cigarettes, including their packaging, fire extinguishers, and small electrical devices. However, wall paint (dispersion paint) is not considered hazardous and will not be accepted.

It's important to note that punctuality is crucial as the hazardous waste mobile is only available at specific locations and times. Setup and teardown also take time at the hazardous waste mobile locations, so waste may not be left at the location before the mobile unit is ready.

Citizens can dispose of hazardous waste from their private households at the mobile unit during the tour. For further information on the disposal of hazardous waste, you can contact the Waste Management Team at the Giessen County Waste Management Authority: phone: 0641 9390 -1995, email: [email protected].

Those who cannot attend the hazardous waste mobile in their immediate vicinity can visit it every Saturday from 9 to 12 pm at the entrance of the waste management center (AWZ) in Lahnstraße 220 in Giessen, or on the first Friday of the month from 3 to 5 pm at the festival grounds "Zur Helle" in Lauchert.

Christian Zuckermann, the waste department head of the Giessen district, emphasised that citizens can dispose of hazardous waste personally at the mobile unit during the tour. This year, fire extinguishers, in addition to electrical devices up to the size of a toaster, can be dropped off at the hazardous waste mobile.
