Competing Giants in Auto Industry: Volkswagen, Hyundai, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz Face Off Against Chinese Electric Vehicles
Volkswagen Unveils ID. CROSS Compact Electric SUV at IAA Mobility 2025
At this year's IAA Mobility event in Munich, Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. CROSS, a compact electric SUV based on the MEB+ platform. This new addition to Volkswagen's electric vehicle lineup promises improved range, software, and driver assistance features compared to earlier models.
The ID. CROSS is positioned as an electric sibling of the T-Cross, offering a front-wheel-drive system producing 155 kW (211 PS) and a forecasted WLTP range of up to 420 kilometers (261 miles). The vehicle is set to enter production in summer 2026.
This is one of four small and compact electric cars Volkswagen plans to introduce starting in 2026, as the company continues to expand its electric vehicle portfolio.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis, a key supplier to the automotive industry, has also been making waves at IAA Mobility 2025. The company showcased its future mobility technologies and expanded its European presence at the event. Hyundai Mobis aims to convert these demonstrations into direct technology orders, aiming to grow its sales in Europe.
Among the technologies Hyundai Mobis is showcasing is the Holographic Windshield Display (HWD) developed with ZEISS, integrated into Kia's EV9. The company will also unveil its M.VICS 6.0 digital cockpit featuring a sliding display and advanced infotainment technologies.
Hyundai Mobis' private booth is targeting global automakers such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz with tailored presentations. The company's core offerings in the booth include integrated SDV solutions, next-generation battery systems, the EDU 3-in-1 module, the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), and the In-Wheel System.
Elsewhere at the event, BMW unveiled its Neue Klasse iX3, a next-generation electric SUV aimed at revitalizing its competitive position in the global EV market. The BMW Neue Klasse iX3 is expected to deliver over 800 kilometers of range on a single charge and can add more than 370 kilometers in just 10 minutes of charging.
A media session led by Axel Maschka, Executive VP and Head of Sales, will take place on September 9 at Messe Munich to outline Hyundai Mobis' vision for next-generation automotive trends. The ID. CROSS embodies Volkswagen's new "Pure Positive" design philosophy, aiming to deliver a more premium feel than typical small SUVs, with an interior oasis design. The production version of the ID. CROSS will debut in mid-2026.
