Competition among firefighters as they tackle blazes and perform rescue operations

In the heart of Oldenburg, the annual local fire department competition took place, attracting six teams from the city and neighbouring municipalities. This event, a tradition since 1988, has been held in the districts of Ofenerdiek and Ohmstede, spanning across six different locations.

The competition, while not primarily designed to determine a winner, serves as a platform to identify training gaps and expose young group leaders to challenging situations. This year, the Eversten local fire department emerged victorious, as announced by Oldenburg's city fire chief, Bernhard Moeller.

Firefighters were tested in various scenarios, including rescuing a person trapped by a drill press, controlling an explosion, and extinguishing both field and house fires. Each team was briefed on the situation only upon arrival at each location, adding an element of realism to the exercises.

The performance level was close among all participating teams, as per Bernhard Moeller. Despite the competitive nature, the teamwork displayed by the firefighters was exemplary, with the young group leaders managing the deployments independently. The public was informed about the exercises in advance, ensuring transparency and community engagement.

The firefighters were evaluated at each station using an assessment sheet, emphasising "careful and tactically correct behaviour." Bernhard Moeller highlighted that these challenging situations should be specifically trained and practiced by the firefighters to ensure they are prepared for any eventuality.

All participating firefighters were highly motivated, according to Bernhard Moeller, reflecting the dedication and professionalism that characterises Oldenburg's volunteer fire departments. The voluntary fire departments take turns hosting the competition each year, fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among the participating teams.

This year's competition marked another successful event in the long-standing tradition of the Oldenburg local fire department competition, reinforcing the importance of training, teamwork, and preparedness in the vital work of firefighting.
