Comprehensive Guide for Portugal's Digital Nomad Residency Documents

Portugal has become an attractive destination for digital nomads, with the introduction of the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa, or D8 visa, in October 2022. This visa allows remote workers to relocate to Portugal for either one or two years.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the visa, you must have a valid passport, work remotely, earn €3,480/month, have international health insurance, and have a clean criminal record. If you have marks on your record but were either never convicted or convicted and served less than one year, you are still eligible for the visa.

Required Documents

The completed visa application is the last document required for the Portugal digital nomad visa. However, several documents need to be prepared and submitted beforehand.

Personal Documents

You must submit a color copy of the biometrics page of your passport with at least six months of validity from the time you plan to enter Portugal. For applicants with a spouse or dependent children, proof of legal relationship (marriage, birth, or adoption certificates) is required.

Along with your Portugal digital nomad visa application, you must include proof of remote work such as a work contract, contract with a remote work allowance clause, or an official letter from your employer. For freelancers, it's a good idea to set up an LLC and provide contracts with your clients as well.

Financial Documents

To prove your income and meet the minimum income requirement, you must submit at least three to six months of bank statements. A copy of annual tax returns is also required.

Other Documents

Some documents may need to be translated into Portuguese depending on the consulate where the application is submitted. Some documents may require an apostille to certify their authenticity and allow use in a foreign country. The documents that may require an apostille include criminal background checks, proof of relationship documents, bank statements, and proof of tax residency.

Health Insurance

An international health insurance policy with at least 30,000€ of coverage, including repatriation, is required for the Portugal digital nomad visa. Nomads Embassy has partnered with SafetyWing and Genki for compliant health insurance for digital nomad visas.

Accommodations

A signed 12-month lease agreement is required for the address of accommodations in Portugal. Using a local real estate agency like Ola Estate is recommended for finding accommodations in Portugal.

Taxes

Digital nomads will pay taxes in Portugal when they apply for the digital nomad visa and establish a residence there.

Pre-submission Stage

Applicants must go through the pre-submission stage to verify the required documents for the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa application.

By following these guidelines, you can successfully apply for the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa and start your new life as a digital nomad in Portugal.
