Concerned Parents Navigate Family Finances' Impact

In August 2025, the polling institute Forsa conducted a survey on behalf of the organization "Save the Children", interviewing 1,003 parents of minor children in Germany. The survey results reveal a significant increase in financial concerns among parents, with many expressing "very significant concerns" about their financial situation.

The survey did not specify the breakdown of concerns for the next 12 months, but it did show that a quarter of parents in Germany are worried they will no longer be able to adequately cover their family's basic needs such as housing, heating, and food. This proportion has risen from 15 to 25 percent since the beginning of the year.

In households with a monthly net income of less than 3,000 euros, 57 percent expressed significant or very significant concerns about being able to afford the necessities. The survey findings also indicate that about 5% of households with a monthly gross income of more than 3,000 euros fear they will not be able to cover basic family needs such as clothing, food, housing, and heating costs in the next twelve months.

Persistent uncertainty among parents in Germany is reflected in the survey results. Eric Großhaus of "Save the Children" has called for improvements to the black-red coalition agreement to address these concerns. He stated that many approaches to combating child poverty remain vague or piecemeal. The survey results for the concerns for the next 12 months were not provided in the article.

The survey conducted by Forsa in August 2025 also asked about concerns for the next 12 months, but the percentage of parents with such concerns was not specified. The question asked was about concerns regarding the ability to cover family's basic needs such as clothing, food, housing, and heating due to financial reasons.

The survey did not specify the demographic or income bracket of the parents asked about the concerns for the next 12 months. However, the increase in parents' financial concerns, compared to January, is 21 percentage points, highlighting the growing financial strain on families across Germany.
