Confident Italian Government under Draghi, affirmed by Renzi

Italy has taken a significant step towards resolving its political crisis with the appointment of Mario Draghi as the country's Prime Minister-designate. President Sergio Mattarella made the announcement on Wednesday, 3rd February, 2021.

Mario Draghi, a renowned economist and the former President of the European Central Bank, is expected to assemble a cabinet of experts to lead Italy out of its current predicament. The political crisis, which has been ongoing for some time, has opened up the possibility for Draghi's appointment.

The failure of exploratory talks for a new left-wing coalition did not directly lead to Draghi's tasking with forming a government, but it did contribute to the political instability that made his appointment possible.

Draghi is considered the most pro-European leader that Italy could wish for. He is known for his role in saving the Euro years ago and is now being hailed as "the Italian who saved the Euro." Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who withdrew his party from the government over a dispute over the use of European funds, believes that Draghi's appointment is a "dream come true."

Renzi, who triggered the political crisis to improve the government, stated that he believes Draghi will now save Italy from its current crisis. He also added that Draghi's appointment implies an improvement in the government is now possible.

Draghi is currently engaged in talks with various political forces to secure majorities in parliament and select cabinet members. His government is expected to focus on resolving the conflict over the use of funds from the EU's "Recovery Fund" to tackle the coronavirus crisis.

Once his cabinet is formed, Draghi will need to secure the confidence of both chambers of parliament. If successful, he will assume the office of Prime Minister and lead Italy through these challenging times.
