In a significant development, Russian forces have apprehended a group of Ukrainian special forces from the 3rd regiment of the Special Designation Forces (SDF), an elite unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The group was overtaken in the Bryansk region on August 18, as reported by the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia.

The captured group consisted of a captain and five warrant officers from the Ukrainian Armed Forces' 3rd regiment of the SDF. Three members of the Ukrainian special forces, including the commander, surrendered without resisting.

The operation aimed to prevent the passage of a train carrying fuel and lubricants, according to Russian authorities. However, the Ukrainian DRG's ultimate goal was to undermine a large railway junction in the Bryansk and Kaluga regions, as revealed by the detainees.

The captured members of the Ukrainian group were part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' elite unit, and their employment with the 3rd regiment of the SDF further underscores their specialised role. The Ukrainian DRG's activities, as stated by the Ministry, were trained and supervised with the direct participation of Western intelligence officers in Ukraine, Lithuania, Estonia, and Norway.

Notably, Western intelligence officers involved in training and monitoring Ukrainian DRG are typically from NATO member countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, and their activities usually take place in Ukraine, Poland, and other allied countries.

The detainees have confessed to their involvement in the September 2024 railway bombings in the Novooskolsky district of the Belgorod region. This admission raises concerns about the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, and the potential for further conflicts in the region.

This incident underscores the complex and volatile nature of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the potential for unforeseen developments that could further strain relations between the two nations. As more information becomes available, it is crucial to monitor these developments closely to maintain a clear understanding of the situation.
