The world of automotive safety is evolving, and China's New Car Assessment Programme (C-NCAP) is leading the charge. Established in 2006 by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), C-NCAP is an independent, government-backed organisation that conducts crash tests and safety evaluations on new vehicles to provide safety ratings beyond legal minimums.
C-NCAP 2024 has emphasised the importance of advanced driving features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), lane detection, blind spot warning, Vulnerable Road User (VRU) detection, and more. These systems are designed to improve vehicle safety and prevent accidents.
One such system is the Blind Spot Detection (BSD) system, which monitors the blind spot of the driver's field of vision and sends out prompts or warning messages when other road users appear in the blind spot. This can help drivers avoid potential collisions.
Another crucial feature is the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system, which sends a warning message when the vehicle is about to depart from its lane. The Lane Keeping Assist System (LKA) takes it a step further by intervening to assist in maintaining the vehicle in its lane.
The Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK) system assists the driver in maintaining the vehicle in its lane when it deviates into an adjacent lane and conflicts with other road participants. The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system monitors other road users approaching laterally at the rear of the vehicle when it is backing up and sends out a warning message when a collision hazard may occur.
In addition, the Door Open Warning (DOW) system monitors other road users to the side and rear of the vehicle when the door is about to be opened in a parked state and sends out a warning message when a collision hazard may occur due to the door opening.
C-NCAP 2024 also includes tests for frontal impact, side impact, and rollover, as well as evaluations of whiplash protection in rear impacts. Moreover, it has introduced a test for AEB False Reaction, which measures the number of times AEB was incorrectly triggered.
Recent advances in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology have extended the reach of C-NCAP to include testing protocols that protect vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and bicyclists. For instance, LeddarTech's AI-based low-level sensor fusion and perception technology, LeddarVision, demonstrates robust performance in adverse conditions and improves VRU and occluded object detection.
C-NCAP 2024 makes active safety, incorporating ADAS, driver monitoring systems (DMS) and road feature recognition (RFR), a key element of the C-NCAP 2024 initiative. It also includes tests for active safety features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) in various scenarios, including pedestrian and two-wheeler collisions.
The Intelligent Speed Limiting System (ISLS) is another feature that C-NCAP 2024 has highlighted. This system automatically obtains speed limit information and monitors the vehicle's speed to ensure compliance with the posted limit.
In Europe, Euro NCAP sets high standards for car safety within the automotive industry. Similarly, in the United States, the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) was established in 1979 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Both organisations provide consumers with vital information on new vehicles' safety features and crashworthiness through a series of rigorous tests.
Vehicles are rated on a scale, typically from one to five stars, with five stars representing the highest level of safety. By choosing vehicles with high safety ratings, consumers can help reduce the number of road accidents and save lives.
