Construction and dedication ceremony of the Realschule Altlünen's new building completed
The city of Lünen celebrated the inauguration of its new Realschule Altlünen on September 3, 2025. The event was attended by Herr Markus Klein, who supervised the construction execution, and Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns.
The new school building was constructed as a KfW-40-EE building, incorporating a photovoltaic system, battery storage, heat recovery, and a green roof. This eco-friendly approach is part of Lünen's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
The need for a new school building arose due to the old one not meeting fire safety regulations. Despite the challenges and cost increases, the city is rejoicing in the successful new construction. The initial budget of 13.5 million euros ballooned to over 30 million euros due to delays, labor shortages, and legal disputes.
The modern school building now offers differentiation rooms, high-performance digital equipment for iPad classes, a new auditorium, cafeteria, and a permanently installed stage. The stage is intended for theater, concerts, and communal singing, providing a versatile space for students' creative expression.
Democracy education has a fixed place in the new school, with an annual project about the 9th of November prepared in different grade levels. Modern soundproofing measures have been implemented to improve learning conditions, and the building is equipped with a comprehensive barrier-free concept, ensuring accessibility for all students.
Mayor Kleine-Frauns emphasised that the new school investment is for safety, quality, and the future of children. He admitted that the cost increases have much to do with the framework conditions under which municipalities build. However, he stated that the new school building shows Lünen's investment in education, an investment that will pay off for future generations.
Kleine-Frauns expressed his heartfelt thanks to all those involved in the construction project. The successful construction was made possible by the efforts of many people, including planners, builders, the administration, and the teaching staff. With the new Realschule Altlünen now open, Lünen's students have a modern, eco-friendly, and accessible learning environment to thrive in.
