New Outdoor Space to Enhance Oldham's Cultural Quarter

Oldham is set to welcome a new public space in its town centre, as the new outdoor area in Hilton Square prepares to open up. This vibrant, intimate venue will be a fantastic addition to the growing Cultural Quarter, bringing together three key buildings: the current Library and Gallery, the restored Old Library (expected to open in early 2025), and the new theatre (expected to open in 2026).

The new space in Hilton Square will be fully accessible and located close to the proposed new theatre, the library, and the Old Library. It is designed to be an ideal place for people to work, live, and raise their families, offering a better quality of life for the community.

The outdoor space will be adaptable, accommodating activities such as outdoor art classes and theatre performances. The central square can accommodate up to 150 people for a stage, complete with lighting and sound systems. This will provide an excellent platform for performers and audiences to come together and enjoy a variety of cultural events.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, expressed her excitement about the new space, stating that it will be a fantastic new location for arts and culture for residents, community groups, and visitors to Oldham. She is looking forward to seeing work get underway on the new space in Hilton Square.

As part of the work, improvements will be made to Southgate, Ashworth, and Greeves Street, including planting, new trees, seating areas, external lighting, and improved paving. This will transform the area, making it more inviting and attractive to residents and visitors alike.

The planning permission for the construction of this new public space for outdoor entertainment in Oldham was granted by the Oldham Council. The inspiration for creating the new area is to make it the 'heart' of Oldham's growing Cultural Quarter.

The new public space in Hilton Square is another addition to Oldham's town centre redevelopment. Councillors from Oldham Council have approved plans for this exciting new venture, and it is expected to be a significant boost to the local economy and community spirit.

With the new space in Hilton Square set to open, Oldham is gearing up for a cultural revolution. This new outdoor venue will undoubtedly become a cherished part of the town's identity, providing a platform for artistic expression and community engagement for years to come.
