Construction initiatives commenced on the primary thoroughfare's bridges and the adjacent wooded zone / Adjustments made in traffic control operations
The city of Halle (Saale) is embarking on a significant infrastructure project, as three bridges undergo renovation. The Rennbahnkreuz will see two bridges rebuilt, while the Holzplatz bridge will also undergo renovation.
The renovation process will begin on August 25, 2025, with the setup of traffic safety measures for the replacement construction of the two northern Rennbahnkreuz bridges and the north part of the Holzplatz bridge. During this phase, lane reductions will be necessary on the lower level of the Rennbahnkreuz bridges, allowing only one lane of traffic in all directions.
Similarly, traffic will be narrowed to one lane in each direction over the respective southern bridge structures for the Rennbahnkreuz and Holzplatz bridges. The underpass at Rennbahnkreuz in the direction of B 80 is expected to be closed on the first weekend of September due to the start of demolition work. After this, the demolition of a second bridge in the direction of Gimritzer Damm is expected to require a full closure of the lower level as well.
The detour during the construction phase will lead towards Mansfelder Straße via Glauchaer Straße, Glauchaer Platz, and Hallorenring. The one-way traffic regulation between Robert-Franz-Ring and Ankerstraße will be suspended during this time. On the Magistrale, the northbound lane will be closed, with traffic directed in both directions over the southbound lane.
Traffic will be narrowed to one lane in both directions on the southern sides of the Magistrale bridges starting from August 25, 2025. The Holzplatz bridge will be fully closed on the lower level, and the street Am Holzplatz below the bridges will be fully closed during this construction phase.
The Genzmer Bridge in the Wilhelm-Jost-Straße will be accessible only in one lane due to weight restrictions, with a traffic light system installed. The first phase of the replacement construction of the northern bridge over the Holzplatz begins on August 22, 2025, under full closure. A week later, the demolition of the second Rennbahnkreuz bridge (opposite direction towards Gimritzer Damm) is scheduled to begin.
The city also plans to renew the road surface alongside the bridge renovation. The cost of the bridge renovation is estimated to be around 11 million euros, funded by state allocations for the maintenance of federal roads. The renovation and replacement of the bridges at the Rennbahnkreuz and Holzplatz are expected to be completed by early 2027.
