Construction of border wall circumvents environmental regulations within a Texas wildlife refuge
The Trump administration's strategies against illegal immigration continue to unfold, with the construction of additional physical barriers and roads on the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Texas.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on Tuesday that she had waived more than two dozen environmental laws to facilitate the border wall construction. Among the waived laws are the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Paleontological Resources Preservation Act, and Federal Cave Resources Protection Act.
The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, despite the waivers, continues to be a national wildlife refuge established to protect biodiversity in Texas. However, it has been conscripted into the Trump administration's expanding war against illegal immigration.
The construction, which is taking place in the vicinity of the border of the United States, is intended to prevent unlawful entries into the country. Secretary Noem stated that there is an acute and immediate need for the construction, and that "more can and must be done" to armor the U.S.-Mexico border.
The border control-related work in the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge also includes exemptions from lesser-known statutes. The objective remains to construct additional physical barriers and roads on the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Secretary Noem declared that the construction is still intended to be part of the measures to armor the U.S.-Mexico border. The construction is still ongoing, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge continues to be a focal point in the Trump administration's border security efforts.
