Construction of Orthopaedics Campus commencing at The Marketplace Mall
The University of Rochester (UR) is embarking on its largest capital project to date with the construction of the UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center at The Marketplace Mall in Henrietta. The project, initially announced in November 2019, is set to cost $227 million.
The new facility, spanning 330,000 square feet, will be nearly three times the size of UR Medicine's largest orthopaedic outpatient facility at Clinton Crossings. The center will offer a range of musculoskeletal services, including orthopaedic surgery and ambulatory care.
UR Medicine plans to retain its other suburban locations in Victor, Webster, Greece, and Penfield, with most of the orthopaedic outpatient programs currently at Clinton Crossings moving to the new site. The search results do not provide information on which company will replace LeChase Construction for the project if the final New York State approach is approved.
LeChase Construction is scheduled to begin work on the project site, which already boasts essential infrastructure such as storm water drainage, utilities, and parking. The former Sears building at the mall will be repurposed as an ambulatory surgery center, scheduled to open in 2022, while a multi-story patient care tower will be built above, with completion expected in 2023.
The project is designed to meet the guidelines for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a globally recognized sustainability certification. LEED-compliant structures are energy- and water-efficient, reducing waste, lowering environmental impact, and operating costs.
UR Medicine has seen a significant increase in demand for its services over the past seven years, with a 25 percent increase in orthopaedic surgery cases and a 60 percent increase in ambulatory visits. The expansion is, therefore, a strategic move to meet current and future patient demand.
The new campus will provide patients and visitors with convenient access to shopping, restaurants, and other amenities at The Marketplace Mall. Its location near the Thruway and interstate routes, and accessibility by public transportation, also ensures easy access for patients.
The project is expected to create more than 300 construction jobs at LeChase and generate business for local construction supply firms. Once completed, approximately 100 support and patient care staff are set to move into offices at the center later this year.
Editor's note: Since the publication of this release, the project cost for the UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center has been updated to $227 million.
