Hildener Straße Redesign: Improving Urban Mobility in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is set to undergo a significant transformation in its urban mobility landscape, with the redesign of Hildener Straße. The project, funded by the state of NRW for approximately two million euros, has a total cost of 4.43 million euros.

The redesign aims to improve pedestrian, cycling, car, and public transport traffic between the Rheinbahn depot and Straße Am Buchholzer Busch. A key aspect of this renovation is making the drainage more sustainable by connecting the southern half of the carriageway to the canal.

For cyclists, through-going cycle paths with a width of 1.85 meters will be laid on both sides of Hildener Straße. In the area of the Rheinbahn operating yard, the cycle lane will be painted red for enhanced visibility.

The intersection of Hildener Straße and Buchholzer Busch will be redesigned as a roundabout to facilitate smoother traffic flow and improve safety for all users.

Pedestrian safety will be prioritized with the installation of a demand-controlled traffic light at Schimmelpfennigstraße. The existing bus stops "Benrath Operating Yard" and "Schimmelpfennigstraße" will be rebuilt barrier-free in both directions to ensure easy access for all.

During construction, a detour will be signposted for traffic going towards Düsseldorf city center, and an alternative construction site route will be set up for pedestrians and cyclists to ensure minimal disruption.

The planned completion for the renovation works at Hildener Straße is by the start of the 2026/27 season, with the project expected to be completed in summer 2026 after the renovation of existing buildings.

This redesign is a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and accessible urban environment in Düsseldorf, making it easier and safer for residents and visitors to navigate the city by foot, bike, car, or public transport.
