The QEII Halifax Infirmary Acute Care Tower Expansion Project, a significant undertaking for the community, has reached a major milestone with the completion of the excavation phase. The construction site, located on Bell Road between Robie and Summer streets, has seen the excavation of a vast area with a depth of 10 meters, a length of 260 meters, and a width of 92 meters, amounting to a total of 543,000 tonnes of rock and soil.

Paul Knowles, Senior Vice-President and District Manager at PCL Construction, the company overseeing the project, expressed his appreciation for this significant step forward. He stated, "Completing the excavation phase is a significant milestone for the project."

The new acute care tower, expected to open in 2031, will be a state-of-the-art facility, boasting 16 operating rooms, a 48-bed intensive care unit, an emergency department, and lab spaces. In addition, a satellite diagnostic imaging department will be part of the new tower, aiming to improve health services in the region.

With four cranes, including one of the tallest free-standing cranes in North America, the construction team is now looking forward to continuing the project, including pouring foundations and building the structure. By the end of the year, crews will start work on the ground floor level of the acute care tower on the Robie Street side.

The total cost of the project is $7.4 billion, and the new tower is expected to have 216 beds. The QEII Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project is poised to make a substantial impact on the community, ensuring top-notch healthcare services for years to come. However, no information about the timeline for the completion of the project was provided in the news release.
