Construction underway for new Sechsfeld sports facility on Fredersdorfer Street
New Heinrich-Hertz Gymnasium to Open in Berlin's Ostbahnhof
A new school building is under construction near Berlin's Ostbahnhof, set to become the Heinrich-Hertz Gymnasium by the start of the 2026/27 school year. The project, which involves several organisations including Berlin.de, HOWOGE, ZECH Hochbau AG, AFF Architects GmbH, and the District Office Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, aims to create 784 school places.
The school is based on the compartment school model, with ten compartments, including one for grades 5 and 6. The new building, designed by AFF Architekten GmbH and constructed by ZECH Hochbau AG, will be a four-story structure, realised despite its small footprint of 6,700 square meters.
The outdoor areas of the school are designed to be barrier-free and divided into play and relaxation zones. The fence around these areas will serve a multifunctional purpose, acting as a bench or pergola. The roof areas will serve as "green classrooms" or playgrounds. A photovoltaic system is planned for the top roof to generate renewable energy.
In addition, a six-field sports hall is being constructed in parallel on nearby Fredersdorfer Street. After the completion of the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium, this sports hall will provide sports facilities for several schools in the area. However, the search results do not specify which particular schools will be taught there.
The sports hall, along with the new school building, is being constructed on the site of a former parking lot at Berlin's Ostbahnhof. After the gymnasium opens, the current site on Rigaer Street will be renovated and used as a primary school in the future.
The construction of the new Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium demonstrates how a contemporary school building can be realised in densely built-up inner-city districts. The outdoor areas of the school will offer diverse learning and stay areas, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive environment for students.
A visualisation of the Heinrich-Hertz Gymnasium upon completion of construction is available, offering a glimpse into the future of education in Berlin's Ostbahnhof. The school is set to become an integral part of the community, providing quality education and facilities for the next generation of students.
