Chaos at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport: Recurring Security Check Delays Affect Hundreds of Travelers
Recurring problems at the security checks at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport have caused significant disruptions, with 119 passengers missing their flights and approximately 700 travelers experiencing delays this year alone.
The State Presidency of Stuttgart is currently investigating the incidents, as the airport personnel at the controls are exclusively under their responsibility. The FDP state parliament faction in Baden-Württemberg has criticized the state government for seeming overwhelmed with organizing security controls.
On August 2, unexpected absences of air security control personnel caused delays, resulting in 94 travelers missing their flights. The situation slightly improved on August 5, with controls reportedly fully staffed. However, the State Presidency assumes that passengers arrived too late at the control points.
CDU state parliamentarian Cornelia von Loga plans to raise the issue of staffing at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport in the transport committee at the end of September. Union ver.di had already called for a solution for the airport in July, criticizing insufficient staffing.
Ryanair, the largest customer of Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, has expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation. Marcel Pouchain Meyer, Ryanair's Germany representative, spoke of an "unsatisfactory situation." The Ministry of Transport cites growth in passengers and a shortage of skilled workers as causes of long waiting times.
Little heed has been paid to the warnings and appeals from union ver.di. The security service at the airport is not provided by the Federal Police but by an external service provider commissioned by the Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium). However, the exact name of the security company is not specified in the available sources.
The State Presidency and the airport authorities have an urgent duty to work out a sustainable and long-term solution for the airport. Ryanair hopes for improvement soon. CDU state parliamentarian Cornelia von Loga will bring the issue to the transport committee in September, aiming to find a solution to the ongoing problems at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.
