In a joint effort to ensure road safety, police departments across the Regierungsbezirk Münster region, including Borken, Coesfeld, Gelsenkirchen, Recklinghausen, Steinfurt, Warendorf, and Münster, conducted a control action focusing on commercial passenger and freight traffic on August 8.

According to Volker Wittenbreder, head of the traffic directorate of the Münster police, the increased presence of trucks on the roads necessitated this focus. The operation, which involved more than 150 officers, was part of statewide focus controls and saw a total of 529 vehicles and their occupants checked.

The results of the joint action were striking. Approximately half of the vehicles had violations, with 61 speeding violations and 54 violations related to cargo. Overloading and insufficient securing of cargo can lead to unintended reactions of the vehicle, potentially causing severe accidents. The police departments of Steinfurt and Coesfeld stopped food transports with improperly maintained cooling.

Furthermore, 52 violations of social regulations, including driving and rest times, were found. Two vehicle drivers tested positive for drugs, underscoring the necessity of such controls.

The operation leader, Wittenbreder, expressed satisfaction with the cooperation among the seven police departments and their partners, which included customs office, BALM, Dutch police, veterinary office, food control office, environmental protection office, and local fine offices.

The high number of detected violations in relation to the number of checked vehicles underscores the necessity of such controls. The police in Münster was responsible for the Regierungsbezirk Münster region.
