Contenders with Unconventional Backgrounds Apply for Ohio Betting Licenses

The Cincinnati Bengals have partnered with Betfred for mobile betting, but no retail partner has been announced yet. Sportsbook newcomer Underdog Fantasy and sports merchandise giant Fanatics have filed legal sports wagering applications in Ohio, joining the likes of HOF Village Newco partnering with Rush Street Interactive, Penn Sports Interactive LLC, Elys Gameboard Technologies, DraftKings, JACK Cleveland Casino and JACK Thistledown Racino, PointsBet, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, Betr, bet365, FanDuel, Hard Rock Bet, betJACK, and Tipico.

Underdog Fantasy will partner with the MLB Cincinnati Reds on a digital platform, while Fanatics has applied for partnerships with the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets and the MLB Cleveland Guardians. Phantom Fireworks, the leading retailer of consumer fireworks in Ohio, has applied for a retail license but did not list a partner.

The NBA Cleveland Cavaliers have a mobile partnership with Fubo Sportsbook and a retail deal with Caesars. The MLS Columbus Crew have a mobile agreement with Tipico, but have not yet applied for a Type B retail license. JSJ Klub, which owns Ohio-based restaurant chain Harry Buffalo, has applied for a retail license and listed PointsBet as its partner.

JACK Entertainment will debut BetJACK retail sportsbooks at both its Cleveland and Thistledown locations, with PlayUp as the mobile partner for the Cleveland location. FC Cincinnati has mobile and retail partnerships with Superbook Sports. The Pro Football Hall of Fame has a mobile partnership with Instabet and a retail deal with Rush Street Interactive.

Miami Valley Gaming Racino has not announced any retail or mobile partners. MGM appears to have plans for three retail sportsbooks in Ohio. The Cleveland Browns have a mobile deal with Bally's and a retail partnership with Caesars.

Ohio's casino control commission has begun accepting applications for Type C licenses and second Management Services Provider applications for larger entities. The second designated application window for Type C sports gaming hosts and second Management Services Providers (MMSPs) has an Aug. 15 deadline.

In total, Ohio has about 15 licensed online sportsbooks, with 25 online (Type-A) licenses and 33 retail (Type-B) licenses available. The state regulator is the Ohio Casino Control Commission.
